Writing the Short Story will build on your knowledge of the short story form, and, more importantly, get you writing. We’ll concentrate on workshopping one another’s stories, as well as reading published short stories and essays about the writing process. Of course, we’ll also do exercises to keep you writing and thinking about different aspects of stories.
I know it’s not easy for some people to speak in class. I make it a welcoming, supportive atmosphere, and you will be surprised how much you will benefit from participating. We are all learning here – me, too! – and this class provides an opportunity to discuss our ideas, theories, and questions about fiction. There is always something new to learn about writing. If you ever have any suggestions or questions, please contact me any time. I’m here to help.
WORKSHOP
Workshop is a mutual commitment: your classmates will take the time to read, think about, and comment on your piece. You owe it to them to do the same. Workshop is fun, and a great learning tool, but it takes a lot of time and you should plan accordingly. Please review the Workshop Guidelines before class begins.
